Hi, I’m Jasmine (she/her/they), your JCR LGBTQ+ officer for Easter Term 2022 to Lent Term 2023. In my role, I’m here to support and celebrate the community here at Medwards, and to host a diverse calendar of events to ensure everyone feels welcome at Medwards and feels like their sexuality and gender is not just accepted, but actively celebrated. That’s something I think is so special about Medwards – there’s the potential for real joy surrounding the LGBT+ community.
I also want to campaign for proper safety and a base level of wellbeing, by promoting the welfare of LGBT+ students. I also just want to listen to your stories – I’m passionate about seeing LGBTQ+ people thrive. A particular interest of mine is the experience of coming out and having conversations with family about sexuality, and I’m always happy to talk about this and hear your experiences navigating coming to terms with your sexuality, whether it’s ongoing or deep in the past.
If you have anything you want to see changed around College or something bad has happened to you, you can reach me at the JCR email address, [email protected] or my personal Instagram (shameless self-promo). I can make it a point of discussion at the weekly JCR meetings I attend on Saturday afternoons and I’ll get back in touch to let you know how we’re going to fix it. We can also arrange a time to meet one-to-one in a confidential space if you’d like to get anything off your chest, or you’re finding any issues surrounding your sexuality or gender difficult to cope with. I also want to hear from you about events you’d like to see in College – any ideas, give me a shout!
May I also take this opportunity to bump my colleague Stevie, the trans/non-binary officer, who can give more specific support around gender issues. They are a real gem of Medwards – they’re amazing and down-to-earth and easy to chat to. You can get in touch with them to discuss anything at all, or to access the Gender Expression Fund, which helps students wanting to purchase gender affirming products like binders, hormone therapy, or travel to/from appointments.
Keep an eye on the JCR Instagram, which is the main way you can find out about LGBTQ+ events we’re hosting in College!! Here’s our Easter Term card – check back over the summer to see our Michaelmas plans. If you’re an incoming fresher, Stevie and I genuinely cannot wait to meet you and make your first year the best and gayest yet. If you’ve got any concerns about coming to Medwards (LGBTQ+ issues or anything at all!) particularly about the title of a “women’s college” please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we can talk anything through before you arrive.
In healing and in pride,
Jasmine
