Hey there, I’m Symrah and I am your proud BAME officer this year’s JCR. Firstly, congratulations on getting into Cambridge and welcome to Murray Edwards. As your representative at your college and within the wider Cambridge University it is my job to help you find ease and comfort as you navigate university, especially regarding any problems and hurdles that may you encounter due to your ethnic background. I will also be publicising and hosting events, in college and by wider societies, for BME students to make finding your place easier as well as create an inclusive place at Medwards. We are lucky to have a variety of different cultures here at Medwards and it is my aim to ensure we feel safe and seen. I am always here to talk, for a quick chinwag or anything that is deeply concerning you.!
My email address is [email protected] – feel free to drop me an email if you want a chat or want to contact me for any reason!
You can also contact me with my camid ja727, if you would like to talk to me about something more personal.
Here are some big societies to be aware of and groups to help make your transition into Cambridge easier.
FLY
This is a support network for women of colour that was founded by a former CUSU President. https://flygirlsofcambridge.com/
CUSU BME Campaign
This is the wider campaign for BME students through Cambridge.
https://www.facebook.com/CambridgeBME/
ACS
This is a social group for anyone of Afro-Carribean background, which hosts events and exclusive networking opportunities.
https://www.facebook.com/CambridgeACS
Finally, there are also some BME specific facebook groups such as the Afro-Caribbean society, the African Society of Cambridge University, the Cambridge University India Society, the Cambridge University Pakistan society, the Association of British and Chinese University Students Cambridge and others. If you’re interested in specific activities like theatre there is also a BME theatre page which advertises BME specific things happening in the theatre scene. Please search for your interests and you will find something! If you don't, why not start your own community!
