Cambridge Glossary:
At Cambridge people like to use lots and lots of silly words that no-one else but Cambridge students will understand. Here's a list of the most important words is provided below.
ADC: The major drama society and also the name of the main theatre
Arch & Anth: Archaeology and Anthropology tripos
ARU: Anglia Ruskin University (the other university in Cambridge)
ASNaC: Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic tripos
Bedder: We don’t have these at M.E., but some colleges have cleaners who
specifically make sure students’ beds are clean and made up
Blue: Sporting achievement of a certain level – refers to both the person and
the achievement
Boatie: A rower
Bop: A college party
Bumps: Rowing races held in Lent and Easter
Cindies: Now named ‘Ballare’, one of the main clubs in town
CUSU: Cambridge University Students’ Union, the representative student body
that makes the decisions for the future of the university. The college
President and Vice President are members
DoS: Director of Studies; the Fellow who oversees your academic progress
Easter Term: The third term in a year, between roughly April and June – exam term
Ent: A college party, also known as Bop, and short for ‘entertainments’
Footlights: Group of comedians who put on Smokers and other events
Formal: Formal dinner – held in M.E. once a week (Tuesdays) but run by some colleges every
day
Gown: We all need one of these for matriculation; also a term for all students,
as in ‘town and gown’
Granta: One branch of the River Cam; a pub near the Sidgwick Site
JCR: Can either refer to the Junior Combination Room (the physical space) or the Committee
Lent: Term The second term in a year, between January and March
Long Vacation: Essentially, the summer holidays
Mathematical Bridge: The bridge in Queens’
Mathmo: Marginally derogative term for someone studying maths
Matriculation: The ceremony where you sign the book of entry into College
May Ball: A lavish event hosted by a College – some Colleges have them each year,
some biennially and some not at all
May Week: The third week of June, populated by balls, garden parties and June
events
Michaelmas Term: The first term of the year, running from October to early December
MML: Modern and Medieval Languages – people will study two languages under
this bracket
NatSci: Someone who studies Natural Sciences
Supo: Refers to small-group supervision teachings
